The Richey Family Legacy Scholarship

The Richey Family Legacy Scholarship was created to pave the way for a wonderful educational opportunity, making it financially possible for an Alva Goldbug student athlete to attend Northwestern Oklahoma State University. Funds were donated at the time of Lizabeth Richey’s retirement from Northwestern. Upon her husband Larry’s death, additional funds were donated by family members and friends.

Larry Richey was an Alva native who graduated from Northwestern in 1973 with a bachelor’s degree in Education and a minor in Sociology. Larry appreciated the quality of education he received at Northwestern. He was on the track and the Ranger football teams and was honored in being a part of the Boot Hill Bowl team. Larry also valued receiving a football scholarship beginning with his sophomore year after serving with the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War. Larry passed in 2020.

Lizabeth Richey holds two degrees from Northwestern: a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration (1996) and a master’s degree in Education with an emphasis in Business (2000). Lizabeth enjoyed the quality education she received and the small class sizes. Working as a full-time employee on campus while attending classes provided her with a broader perspective.

It is important to the Richey family to invest in the future by investing in Northwestern, which they believe remains a sound, viable vessel for outstanding education in northwest Oklahoma.

Applicants must be incoming full-time student athletes who graduated from Alva, (Okla.) High School. Preference will be given to football and track students.

“Larry and Lizabeth will always be a part of our Ranger Family and this gift exemplifies their love of Northwestern,” said Dr. Bo Hannaford, Northwestern president. “With Lizabeth’s connection to Alva Public Schools and our strong partnership with the school, this will be a great benefit to an Alva student-athlete. I appreciate the family and friends in honoring this wonderful family.”
